What Being the Client Taught Me (Again!) About Being a Photographer

Recently, I had the rare experience of stepping in front of the camera for a branding photo session—and let me tell you, it was eye-opening in the best way. As photographers, we spend so much time behind the lens, guiding our clients, setting the tone, and aiming for just the right angles. But being the client this time gave me such a valuable perspective. It reaffirmed so many things I believe deeply about what makes a photo session truly successful—and reminded me how those small details matter so much.

Here’s what stood out most:

1. The Client Relationship is Everything

I’ve always believed this, but feeling it firsthand brought it home in a whole new way. As the person being photographed, I realized just how much trust it takes to be vulnerable in front of a camera. That trust only happens when the client feels like their photographer is their biggest cheerleader.

Carina, my photographer, immediately made me feel like I was in good hands. She listened, encouraged, and genuinely seemed excited about the vision for my shoot. That sense of support allowed me to relax, have fun, and show up as my best self—and that’s the kind of experience I strive to give every single client who steps in front of my lens.

2. Posing Guidance is Worth Its Weight in Gold

Can we just shout this from the rooftops? Having a photographer who not only gives clear posing direction but can demonstrate what they want is a total game-changer. Carina was so intentional with her guidance. I never had to wonder, “What should I do with my hands?” or “Does this look weird?”—because she walked me through everything with clarity and confidence.

That experience reminded me just how essential posing support is, especially when working with people who don’t love being in front of the camera. (Which, let’s be honest, is most people!) I already put a lot of care into this part of my sessions, but now I’m coming back to it with fresh energy and ideas.

3. A Clear Vision Makes All the Difference

Before our session, Carina and I had several conversations about the look and feel I wanted. I shared a Pinterest board, we chatted about wardrobe and vibe, and we kept the lines of communication open throughout the shoot. That clarity made everything flow so smoothly—and it ensured that the final images reflected my brand in the most authentic way.

As someone who guides clients through this same planning process, it felt so good to be reminded of how important it is. When the vision is aligned from the start, magic happens.

So, what’s the big takeaway?

Being on the other side of the camera reminded me of what my clients experience—and how much it matters to show up for them with intention, empathy, and excitement. It also gave me a few new tricks and tweaks I can bring into my own sessions, which is always a bonus.

If you’ve ever felt nervous about booking a branding session or family portraits, just know—I get it. I’ve been there. And I’m here to make sure your experience feels just as supported, guided, and joy-filled as mine did.

Here’s to showing up fully, on both sides of the camera.
